St. Giles holds a book and a crozier, the symbol of his status as an abbot. The narrative carving in the bottom half of the work relates the story of the "unspeakable" sin that King Charles said he could not confess. On the right, an angel brings Giles a scroll naming the sin while the saint is saying Mass. On the left, we see him confronting the king, who has removed his crown and kneels humbly with it in his right hand. He confesses and is absolved of his sin.
